Verifying AI Results

AI is quick and convenient, but we know it can return incorrect results. It's a good idea to take steps to verify the results provided to ensure you base your work on accurate information. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Look at Sources or Citations: Both Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini provide citations for the information that they provide. This gives you the opportunity to visit the sources sites so you can verify the sources is reliable and trustworthy. If a source is not cited, you can use a follow up prompt to request one.
  • Cross-Check with Trusted Sources: Search independently: Use reputable websites, academic journals, or official publications to confirm facts. Use fact-checking sites: Websites like Snopes, PolitiFact, or FactCheck.org can help verify claims.
  • Look for Consistency: If multiple reputable sources agree on the same point, it’s more likely to be accurate. Be cautious if the information seems inconsistent or only appears on obscure sites.
  • Use Domain Experts: For specialized topics (e.g., legal advice, medical information, scientific research), consult a professional or peer-reviewed literature.
  • Check the Publication Date: Information can become outdated quickly. Always check when the data or source was published.
  • Use Critical Thinking: Ask yourself: Does this make sense? Is it too good to be true? What’s the context? Be especially skeptical of emotionally charged or sensational claims.
